Different Types of Concrete Sealers

Sealers are chemical products that are crucial for protecting concrete surfaces from water erosion, staining, contaminants, and large cracks. It also improves the durability of your floors while maintaining its appearance.

Picking the right one for your home’s surface plays a big part in both appearance and performance. Read on to learn about the different types of concrete sealers.

Acrylic Sealers

This is the most commonly used sealer since it’s affordable and user-friendly. It forms a thin and ultraviolet-resistant film that doesn’t allow anything to pass through the crevices. This is ideal if you’re looking for something that functions well against moisture and chemical or oil absorption.

Acrylic sealers are available in solvent and water-based formulations and can be used on both interior and exterior surfaces. After applying, it only takes about an hour to dry.

Penetrating Sealers

Penetrating sealers sink into the surface to a depth of 1/8 inch to prevent moisture from entering. But, it’s also breathable enough so the water vapor underneath the concrete can escape. Apart from that, it provides invisible protection to maintain the floor’s natural look.

They’re flexible enough to be used on different types of bare concrete. Penetrating concealers can protect surfaces from staining, ultraviolet rays, and erosion. It’s also highly resistant to extreme temperatures.

Polyurethane Sealers

Polyurethanes are almost twice as thick as acrylics. It forms a sturdy film and offers stiff protection against erosion and chemicals. Its excellent durability will make the concrete surface resistant to staining and scuffing.

They can be used for interior and exterior concrete and are ideal for high-traffic roads. Most polyurethane sealers offer UV resistance, color enhancement and stability, and gloss. Unlike acrylics and epoxies, they can cure at a lower temperature. But, they shouldn’t be applied to wet surfaces since they aren’t tolerant of moisture until completely dry.

Epoxy Sealers

Epoxy provides a thick protective film on concrete surfaces, providing a durable, long-lasting, and abrasion-resistant layer. It’s ideal for designing purposes since it has a high-gloss finish and pigments can be easily added. It’s also available in water and solvent-based solutions.

They’re generally not ultraviolet resistant, so they can yellow and fade with sun exposure. But, premium epoxies are now available with a UV protective topcoat. Epoxy sealers are commonly used on interior surfaces such as warehouse floors, car dealerships, and commercial kitchens.

Choosing the right concrete floor sealer is crucial for maintaining the stability and appearance of surfaces. Before purchasing one, make sure you know which type will provide enough durability, protection, and longevity to your home.
